Enhanced Weathering Project Spain

Pilot locatie Spanje

The Verde Growth project is an enhanced weathering project on hundreds of hectares of irrigated farmland in the province of Salamanca, Spain. The project uses the soil improver Wo20 to remove CO₂ permanently while improving soil health and partially replacing conventional agricultural inputs such as lime.

Spain has a wealth of potential for CO₂ removal, both in terms of feedstock availability, and also as an appropriate CDR host in certain key regions. Strategic opportunities are highlighted in the 2023 study by our Head of Science Liam Bullock – https://lnkd.in/eDtmJ3QQ

Wo20 is a safe to apply highly reactive silicate mineral certified under EU Regulation (FPR 2019/1009) and approved for use in organic farming by FiBL and SKAL. Over the full project lifecycle we aim to remove more han 3,000 tonnes of CO₂.

Monitoring includes monthly porewater and soil sampling. The removal process is to be verified via Isometric’s enhanced weathering methodology.

The Verde Growth project not only delivers durable CO₂ removal, but also contributes to healthier soils, reduced dependence on lime, and new insights into the agronomic value of silicate amendments. It stands as a scalable and scientifically grounded model for high-integrity carbon removal in European agriculture.
