Environmental defense wins lawsuit against Shell: CO2 emissions must descend faster.

Shell has a worldwide responsibility to reduce CO2 emissions more quickly and must act on this in the short term. That is what the District Court of The Hague has ruled in a case that Milieudefensie has brought against Shell, among others.

“Shell must do its part to help combat dangerous climate change,” the judge said. “The oil company is obliged through its group policy to strictly reduce the CO2 emissions of the Shell group, its suppliers and customers by the end of 2030 by a net 45 percent compared to the level of 2019.”

Big consequences

Shell currently has the target of reducing its CO2 emissions by at least 20 percent by 2030 and 45 percent by 2035. The verdict can have major consequences; the conviction could serve as a catalyst for new lawsuits against companies with high CO2 emissions, both in the Netherlands and worldwide.
